Darin Rovere is Senior Counsel at Sovereign Strategy and the founder and CEO of Sustainability Excellence. He has worked extensively on sustainability strategy, management and GRI-based reporting with leading companies and governments in the Gulf and internationally.
Prior to moving to the Middle East in 2007, four of his international clients ranked number one in the world for sustainability in their sector, as rated by prestigious rankings such as the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI).
Darin has made a visible contribution to sustainability. He worked with the first regional company, government agency and non-profit to adopt sustainability strategies and reports in line with Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines. Of the 100+ sustainability reporters in the region, nearly half are past or present clients of Sustainability Excellence, most having been engaged by Darin. Darin recommended, drafted the charter for, and delivered the first year of training to the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Group, now comprising more than 50 organizations committed to sustainability. He co-authored the first Arab Responsible Competitiveness Report and chaired the CEO panel on the report at the regional World Economic Forum. He also co-authored the International Finance Corporation’s first report on the state of ESG/sustainability screened investing in the Arab region. He authored the “Abu Dhabi Sustainability Opportunities and Risks” report, including the development of an Emirate-level sustainability scorecard and global rankings gap analysis, for the General Secretariat of the Executive Council of Abu Dhabi.
Darin has been active in the oil, gas, petrochemicals, energy and industry sectors. He served as judge for the Gulf Petrochemicals and Chemicals Association’s (GPCA) Responsible Care Awards, and was Chair of GPCA’s most recent Sustainability Conference, of which Sustainability Excellence was the content partner. In Qatar, he worked with the Ministry of Energy and Industry to develop and implement their Energy and Industry Sustainability Sector Initiative, which within three years involved more than 35 major companies reporting to the Ministry and publicly on more than 40 indicators agreed through facilitation by the Ministry and Sustainability Excellence. Darin worked at the Ministerial level and CEO and C-Suite Level to ensure effective buy-in, implementation and results. Darin also oversaw the development of Qatar Petroleum’s first sustainability report and related preparation, and has worked with other energy and industry companies in the region and globally including ZADCO from the ADNOC family, Dolphin Energy, Oxy (their global offices in USA), and Enbridge (Canada, ranked #1 in world for their sector on Dow Jones Sustainability Index at time of collaboration).
Darin leads Sustainability Excellence’s international partnerships, such as with the Global Reporting Initiative, where Sustainability Excellence led the first Arab CEO delegation to the GRI, is the GRI’s only regional data partner, and most recently formally launched the new GRI Standards in the region. Darin is also engaged with the United Nations Principles for Responsible Investment, the Carbon Disclosure Project, International Integrated Reporting Council, and other globally leading sustainability initiatives and institutions at their most senior levels. As our clients’ international ambitions expand, Darin facilitates international collaborations for them.
